Healing Eye Problems: Vision Restoration through Ayurveda

Healing Eye Problems: Vision Restoration through Ayurveda

In the digital age, our eyes are under constant assault. Hours staring at blue light from screens leads to dry eye syndrome, myopia (nearsightedness), early onset of cataracts, and macular degeneration. In Ayurveda, the eyes are governed by Alochaka Pitta, a sub-dosha of fire and light. When we overstrain our eyes, this fire becomes excessively dry and hot, literally burning out the optic nerves and drying the lubricating fluids of the eye.

The Satyam Yogashramam Vision Protocol

We treat a wide variety of eye disorders using ancient, highly specialized ophthalmic treatments known as Kriya Kalpa.

1. Netra Tarpana (Eye Rejuvenation)

This is the ultimate therapy for tired, dry, and strained eyes. A dough ring made of black gram is placed around the eye orbits to create a leak-proof seal. We then pour pure, lukewarm medicated Triphala Ghee (or Jeevantyadi Ghee) into the ring, completely submerging the open eyes. The patient blinks gently in the ghee for 15-30 minutes. The lipid structure of the ghee crosses the blood-retinal barrier, cooling the Pitta, nourishing the optic nerve, and rapidly healing corneal damage.

2. Trataka (Yogic Gazing)

Trataka involves staring unblinkingly at the flame of a ghee lamp placed at eye level in a dark room until tears stream down the face. This powerful Kriya Yoga practice cleanses the tear ducts, strengthens the eye muscles, and dramatically improves concentration and memory.

3. Palming and Eye Asanas

Simple daily practices, such as vigorously rubbing the palms together to generate heat and placing them gently over closed eyes (palming), transfer healing prana directly into the eye sockets. Coupled with specific eye rotations and shifting focus points, these exercises prevent the stiffening of the ocular muscles that leads to needing glasses.

4. Dietary Support

The eyes require massive amounts of Vitamin A and antioxidants. We prescribe daily fresh carrot and beetroot juice, Triphala powder mixed with honey and ghee at night, and an abundance of dark leafy greens. Regular application of pure rose water also keeps the eyes brilliantly clear and white.
