Whether it is Osteoarthritis (wear and tear of the cartilage), Rheumatoid Arthritis (autoimmune inflammation), or general knee and shoulder pain, the standard protocol usually involves painkillers, steroid injections, and eventually, joint replacement surgery. Understanding Joint Degradation
In Ayurveda, joint pain is classified into two main types:
- Sandhigata Vata (Osteoarthritis): Caused by aggravated Vata, which dries out the synovial fluid that lubricates the joints, leading to friction, clicking sounds, and cartilage breakdown.
- Amavata (Rheumatoid Arthritis): Caused by the accumulation of 'Ama' (toxic, undigested metabolic waste). This toxic sticky substance gets lodged in the joints, triggering an autoimmune response where the body attacks its own tissue, causing severe swelling, redness, and morning stiffness.

1. Detoxification (Panchakarma)
For Amavata, we must first remove the toxic 'Ama'. We use Virechana (therapeutic purgation) to flush toxins from the liver and GI tract. Until the body is clean, no amount of medicine or calcium will reach the joints.
2. Janu Basti & Kati Basti
For dry, degenerating joints (like knees or lower back), we create a dam made of black gram dough around the joint and fill it with warm, highly potent medicated oils like Mahanarayana Taila. The oil is kept warm for 40 minutes, allowing it to penetrate deep into the joint capsule, lubricating the cartilage, and stimulating the production of new synovial fluid.
3. Cupping & Leech Therapy
For severely inflamed, swollen joints, we use traditional Wet Cupping (Hijama) or medicinal Leech Therapy (Jalaukavacharana) directly over the joint. This instantly removes stagnant, toxic blood and dramatically reduces inflammation within hours.
4. Dietary Shifts
Recovery is impossible without an alkaline diet. We prescribe an anti-inflammatory diet rich in organic turmeric, ginger, moringa, and specific medicinal herbs grown in our Kawal Forest farm, while strictly eliminating nightshades, refined sugars, and processed dairy.
